PILLAR PROCEDURE

There is now a simple, minimally invasive treatment option for people who snore and for people who suffer from mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. At Staten Island Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Hoffman and Dr. Stein offer the Pillar Procedure snoring treatment, a simple, safe, and effective procedure that can be performed in as little as 20 minutes. More than 30,000 people worldwide have been treated with the Pillar Procedure.

How does the Pillar Procedure work?

The Pillar Procedure is a minimally invasive procedure designed to provide chronic snorers with lasting relief by treating the soft palate issues that cause snoring and sleep apnea. During the Pillar Procedure, at least three tiny implants are inserted into the soft palate tissues. These small metal implants offer structural support to stiffen the soft palate, reducing the vibrations that cause snoring or can lead to airway obstruction. Once implanted, the inserts are not visible, cannot be felt, and won't interfere with swallowing or speech. In very few cases, some patients reported feeling a foreign body in their throat, which is temporary and disappears within a few days after the Pillar Procedure.

What should I expect from the Pillar Procedure?

Unlike other surgical treatments for snoring, the Pillar Procedure does not require removing or damaging tissue. Following the procedure, discomfort is minimal and easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Most patients are able to return to their normal diet and activities the same day as the procedure.

When will I start to see results from the Pillar Procedure?

In some cases, patients notice improvement in as a little as a few weeks after the Pillar Procedure. For others, it may take up to three months to experience the full effect. The Pillar Procedure is intended to offer lasting relief from chronic snoring.

Am I a good candidate for the Pillar Procedure?

The Pillar Procedure is a viable treatment option for you if your soft palate is causing or contributing to chronic snoring or obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Hoffman or Dr. Stein will meet with you to examine your airway to determine if you are a good candidate for the Pillar Procedure.
